Meet Mel News Can you share a key milestone or achievement in your career? Becoming the first Australian employee to reach 10 years with Total E&P Australia, a subsidiary of Total Energies, was a significant milestone. I started as the company’s first full-time employee in Australia, supporting its incredible growth. What began as a team of four sharing office space evolved into a thriving business, and I had the privilege of contributing to this transformation. During this journey, I advanced from Executive Assistant to the General Manager to Head of Office Services, managing the offices in Perth and Brisbane and ensuring smooth operations for the subsidiary. Supporting French expatriates settling into life in Australia was another deeply rewarding aspect of my role. Another unforgettable chapter in my career was recording three daily radio shifts across regional Western Australia for RedFM over 18 months. It was both challenging and fulfilling to reconnect with my passion for radio, and I’m grateful to Jason McCarthy for giving me the opportunity to re-enter the industry. What challenges have you faced as a woman in your career, and how did you overcome them? The biggest challenge I’ve faced has been balancing motherhood with a demanding career. Taking nine months away from the office was a big adjustment, and returning to work while juggling the responsibilities of a young child and family commitments wasn’t easy. When you love your job as much as I do, it’s natural to want to give it your all. But balancing this passion with the demands of motherhood has been a journey of perseverance and learning. Despite the challenges, I’ve found ways to navigate this path, and I’m proud of the progress I’ve made. What skills or traits do you think are essential for success in this industry? This advice applies not just to this industry but to any career. It’s something I share with my 14-year-old daughter as she embarks on her first job: Work hard: Put in 100%. Effort and persistence are key to achieving meaningful success. Respect: Treat everyone—your colleagues and leaders—with respect. It’s the foundation of strong relationships and a good reputation. Common sense: This underrated trait is invaluable for navigating both work and life effectively. And, as Pink so wisely advises, “Don’t be a dick! Be yourself, fly your own flag, don’t be rude, and care about others.” What advice would you give to other women starting their careers in insurance or business? Be bold, be courageous, and most importantly, be yourself. Who is a woman that has inspired you, and why? I’ve been fortunate to work with four extraordinary women throughout my career: Terri-Anne Pettit, Delphine Gade, Hazel Clinton Fowler, and Natalie Kennedy. Each of them has inspired me with their leadership, expertise, and unwavering commitment to empowering others. They were masters of their craft, always eager to share their knowledge in an encouraging way. Their empathy, compassion, and mentorship created an environment where I felt empowered to grow and succeed. Their influence has left a lasting impact on my career and personal development. How do you balance your career with other aspects of your life? I start each day with an early morning gym session, which helps me focus on myself and sets the tone for the day. Sundays in our house are dedicated to preparation—if we skip this routine, the week quickly descends into chaos! What does International Women’s Day mean to you? To me, International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements and reflect on the progress we’ve made toward gender equality. It’s also a reminder of the work still to be done. The changes we strive for today aren’t just for us but for future generations, including my daughter. Category: News « Back
