Meet Taruna. News Monday, 03 March 2025 What inspired you to pursue your career in insurance/broking? I've always had a passion for problem-solving and a desire to help people. Insurance and broking offered the perfect combination of both—allowing me to tackle complex challenges while making a meaningful difference in people's lives. Can you share a key milestone or achievement in your career? One of the most significant milestones in my career was restarting my professional journey after relocating to Australia, following a nearly 10-year gap. Returning to the workforce after such a long break came with unique challenges—from adapting to a new industry landscape to catching up with evolving trends and technologies. I embraced the opportunity to learn, upskill, and build my network. This experience demanded resilience and determination, as well as a strong commitment to personal and professional growth. I took relevant courses and connected with industry professionals to better understand the Australian market. Successfully re-establishing my career has been a testament to adaptability, perseverance, and the willingness to step out of my comfort zone. This milestone reinforced my belief in the power of reinvention and the importance of continuous learning. What challenges have you faced as a woman in your career, and how did you overcome them? Like many women, I've faced challenges of being underestimated and feeling the need to prove myself. To overcome this, I focused on building my expertise and demonstrating my value through tangible results. I worked hard to develop strong relationships with colleagues and mentors, learning from their experiences while also finding my own voice. Perseverance, confidence, and proactively seeking out mentors and opportunities have been key in navigating these challenges. Ultimately, I've learned that being a woman doesn't define my abilities—it's my knowledge, work ethic, and commitment that truly matter. What skills or traits do you think are essential for success in this industry? Attention to detail, strong communication skills, relationship-building, negotiation, adaptability, and problem-solving are all essential traits for success in this industry. What advice would you give to other women starting their careers in insurance or business? Stay resilient, embrace every learning opportunity, and remain confident in your abilities. Growth comes from facing challenges head-on, so don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Who is a woman that has inspired you, and why? Michelle Obama has been a huge inspiration to me because of her strength, intelligence, and grace. She has shown that success doesn't require sacrificing your identity or background. Her journey—from growing up in Chicago to becoming the First Lady—demonstrates the power of hard work, perseverance, and staying true to your values. I admire how she advocates for education, women's rights, and empowerment. Michelle's authenticity and ability to balance her personal and professional life are qualities I deeply respect. She’s a reminder that women can be leaders, change-makers, and unapologetically themselves, no matter the challenges. Her story continues to motivate me to pursue my goals with confidence and make a positive impact in my community. How do you balance your career with other aspects of your life? Finding balance between my career and personal life is an ongoing journey, but I've learned to prioritise and manage my time effectively. Setting clear boundaries between work and personal time has been crucial. I make sure to disconnect from work when I'm off the clock, dedicating time to my family and personal interests. Maintaining this balance keeps me motivated and productive in my career while ensuring I have the energy to be present in my personal life. What does International Women’s Day mean to you? International Women's Day is a time to reflect on the progress we've made toward gender equality while recognising the challenges that remain. It's a celebration of the strength, resilience, and achievements of women worldwide, and an opportunity to amplify voices that are often overlooked. For me, it's a reminder of the importance of supporting and uplifting each other, breaking down barriers, and continuing to fight for a world where every woman has equal opportunities, respect, and the freedom to thrive. How can businesses like Knightcorp support gender equality and women in the workplace? Businesses like Knightcorp can foster a culture that values diversity and inclusion at all levels. Providing equal opportunities for growth and advancement through fair recruitment practices, mentorship programs connecting women with senior leaders, and leadership training is essential. Offering resources for professional development, such as workshops or networking opportunities tailored to women, can empower them to reach their full potential. Encouraging open conversations about gender equality and directly addressing issues like unconscious bias, harassment, or discrimination are crucial steps towards creating an inclusive workplace.
